I guess I didn't read all the way through your comment again before I responded- I'm pretty sure we do vit k orally, and I don't remember anything about a PKU test, if it's done in the hospital, I probably did it. We did do hep B, our Dr says it is optional when there aren't close contacts with hep B. I wanted it though just because after working at Emmaus and kids camps and such, you just never know.

You're getting close!! I hope you're feeling well, and ready for baby!

You know, vaccines were something we didn't know much about originally and just did them without questioning. Once I started to question more things and research to make the decision myself, I wasn't 100% decided one way or another. There are a few vaccines I would get for sure, and some I think aren't totally necessary. At that point, I referred to our Dr. whom I have known and trusted and agreed with for the most part for many many years. She think vaccines are important and the benefit, even with slight risk, of the vaccine far outweighs the potential risk without it. We have done all the vaccines that she recommends. As for the schedule, doing most all of them before the age of 2, it's hard. I hate getting my baby all these shots, but they have been tested and approved to administer together and at certain ages. It is much more difficult (and more heartbreaking) for my older ones to get shots. They know it's coming, they're so anxious about it ahead of time, then still have to go through the same shot. I know they hurt, but physically the pain is short lived for a baby. An older kid has a harder time mentally/emotionally, and also has more anxiety in general about any type of healthcare if they remember always getting shots. I don't know if any of that helps, but that's how we do it!

We didn't, for all the same reasons that you're not really considering it. But that was easy - the immunizations, etc., are harder decisions to make, at least for me.

We had our twin boys circumcised. I left it up to my husband and he said yes. We didn't really discuss why but I am sure that it has to do with social reasons. My husband is an athletic trainer and there is a large possibility that our boys will be in sports and in locker rooms. So I am sure that played into it. Plus he is circumcised so maybe that factored in as well.

But...if I had to do it over again...I would be against it. I was present for the procedure and when the boys were brought back to me they were asleep and seemingly fine. But dealing with that horrible plastibell thing that stays on while it heals is HORRIBLE! As it started to fall off one of my boys it got caught on the cloth prefold and actually tore off a little. I felt horrible as my son was in obvious pain. There was blood. I was crying and shaking and telling him I was soooo sorry. My other son didn't have the same problem. But once is definitely enough!

And trying to keep that stupid plastic thing clean is a nightmare in itself.

As for the other things we didn't really get much say. Both boys were transverse and wedged in pretty tightly as they were both big for twins. I had a c-section so I had the drugs and they were whisked away because they needed oxygen. They were in the level two nursery so they were given whatever was routine.

Did I prefer it that way? Not really but all that mattered was that my boys were okay. The nurses and doctors and all the staff were so great and so tender and loving with the boys. And I couldn't have asked for more!

Hopefully the next time we are pregnant it will only be with one baby and we can have the birth center birth we were hoping for!

Thanks Jamyn. I didn't realize your boys weren't circumcised. It's interesting to discover all the things people do just because "everyone else is doing it" in reference to babies...and to everything!

Did you look into those other things I mentioned much? Did you get all the vaccines and such? Vitamin K? PKU? Hepatitis B?

We'll probably go ahead and get the PKU test done. Not sure about the others yet. I've found very mixed opinions regarding the necessity of Hep B vaccine for every baby as opposed to those who have mothers with Hep B or family members who will be around them. I've also looked into an oral administration of Vitamin K in smaller doses as opposed to the huge amount they inject at the hospital, but that might not be possible...so we'll see.

AAaahhh...so many decisions!!! :) Hope all is well with your clan!

It's funny that the majority of males aren't circumcised, yet it's the norm here in the midwest. Most unneccesary procedures are done to make people more comfortable, I don't understand how people can make their babies that uncomfortable for no reason, other than social acceptance. When people tell me they just wanted their boy to look like everyone else, I tell them not to move too far away or he'll be the one that's different. And as for hygeine, anything can get infected if it's not cleaned. We've never had any problems with the boys and do nothing special to care for it. You two are doing so great researching and making all your own decisions! You will be amazing parents! You'll have to write a book someday...
